More about Denmark

Danes can trace their roots all the way back to pre-Roman times, although the beginning of the Viking Age around 800AD is where lots of people choose to pick up the national story. The Vikings conquered a huge part of Europe over a period of about two centuries, leaving their mark on settlements across the continent.

One of the best places to gain an insight into life in the Viking era is the Trelleborg Viking Village Museum, near the town of Slagelse. The Viking Ship Museum can be found at Roskilde, just 30 minutes outside Copenhagen.

Local cuisine

Danish food has become increasingly sophisticated in recent years, drawing inspiration from international cuisine and a host of different cultures. Traditionally, Danes cooked with locally grown ingredients, and some of their older dishes are still very popular today.

Meat, cheese, bread and pastry are all staple parts of the Danish diet. Smorrebrod, open rye bread sandwiches with a variety of meat or vegetable toppings, are a must-try during your visit. Herring is a popular dish throughout Denmark, harking back to the times of seafaring Vikings. Marinated, smoked or fried – there are several ways locals enjoy this particular fish. For dessert, there’s wienerbrod – better known around the world as Danish pastry.

Festivals, fairs and other annual events play an important role in Danish life. Copenhagen’s famed winter markets pull in visitors from far and wide at the end of the year, with stalls and other attractions taking up residence in areas such as Nyhavn and Tivoli Gardens.

The festival of Saint Hans is held in the summer and often includes a family dinner followed by a community bonfire at a lake or beach. A carnival-style holiday called fastelavn is celebrated in February.
