Discover remarkable Rome

Rome holidays are your ticket to ancient ruins, artistic masterpieces and the sights and sounds of a city that guarantees a treat for the senses.

One of Italy’s best-known sights, the Colosseum sits at the centre of the Eternal City alongside the nearby Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, which together provide a treasure trove of fascinating stories.

The architectural heritage here is plain to see on a walk down the Spanish Steps or a visit to make a wish in the Trevi Fountain.

Meanwhile, Rome’s Vatican City is the home of centuries of world-class Renaissance art – and of course the spiritual centre of Roman Catholicism.

More about Rome

History

With a fascinating history that spans thousands of years, Rome has more than its fair share of stories echoing through its streets and winding lanes.

Early signs of human occupation of this ancient powerhouse begin approximately 14,000 years ago, with the city said to have later been founded by the fabled brothers Romulus and Remus in 753BC.

The area is perhaps best known for its role as the capital of the Roman Empire from 27BC to 285AD and some of its architecture dates back to this period. Rome has also housed the official papal residence for around 700 years.

Local cuisine

Italian cuisine is hearty and delicious, which makes eating out one of the highlights of holidays in Rome.

While the pasta is superb here – particularly spaghetti alla carbonara, a speciality in the Italian capital – there are plenty of other delectable dishes to be sampled at cafes, bars and restaurants across the city.

Suppli, a fried ball of rice filled with ragu and mozzarella, salted cod and fiori di zucca (deep-fried courgette flower) will have your mouth watering with each bite.

Trapizzino, only invented this century, has rapidly become one of the most popular street foods – it’s a folded pizza pocket packed with a range of ingredients from meatballs to braised oxtail.

Customs and etiquette

While Rome is a Western country with plenty of cultural freedom, the city is full of churches and cathedrals where guests are expected to dress appropriately.

The city pauses on August 15 for the public holiday known as Ferragosto. It’s worth bearing in mind that some attractions and restaurants may not be open around this time.
