Germany’s rich history is definitely worth investigating, with countless landmarks built by the nation's former royal leaders and powerful nobles that can still be admired to this day.

Much of the country’s scenic landscape is dotted with magnificent strongholds. Heidelberg Castle makes for a wonderful day trip from Frankfurt or Stuttgart and is one of the most famous, with some of its oldest fortifications dating back to the 13th century.

Neuschwanstein Castle to the south of Munich is breathtaking to behold, with its intricate spires, awe-inspiring turrets and stunning setting.

The hilltop marvel, built by King Ludwig II, has served as the inspiration for many a fairy tale. Head to Marienbrücke (Marie’s Bridge) for the very best views of this stunning structure.

More about Germany

Cuisine

German cuisine is often characterised by hearty meat dishes and indulgent baked goods.

It’s well-known for its braised roast meat with sauerkraut and the classic dessert of a cream-topped Kirschtorte cake, better known as Black Forest gateau.

In the cool mountains you’ll find a wealth of warming potato and bread-based dishes, while seafood is more readily available in the coastal towns close to Hamburg.

In larger cities, traditional German treats such as giant pretzels can be found alongside a variety of international favourites.

History and heritage

This nation has a long and rich history – something that is clearly showcased in its stately architecture and impressive landmarks.

Immerse yourself in the local heritage during a holiday to Germany by visiting some of the country’s most notable sites and fascinating museums.

Marvel at the magnificent pillars of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, take a trip from Dusseldorf to the Gothic interior of Cologne Cathedral or visit Alte Pinakothek in Munich – one of the world’s oldest art galleries.

You’ll also find numerous German ‘schloss’, or palaces, located in and around major cities, many of which have beautiful grounds to explore. The German countryside is liberally peppered with romantic castles to discover further afield.

Religion

The predominant religion in Germany is Christianity. First introduced here in the 4th century, Christianity is today followed by around 70 per cent of all Germans, though this varies regionally. Judaism and Islam are among other faiths widely practised around the nation.

Main Christian denominations include Roman Catholic and Evangelical – with the heritage of the former seen in a host of magnificent cathedrals and quaint rural churches throughout the country. Traditional regional dress is sometimes worn to services and religious events in states such as Bavaria.

Germany observes several Christian holidays and during these periods, some venues may be closed or observe shorter opening hours.
