Discover the White City

Belgrade is the country’s exuberant riverside capital.

Home to passionate artists and a heady mix of modern buildings and Soviet-era Brutalist edifices, it’s the best place to get a feel for modern Serbia.

Explore its wealth of museums and galleries in the day, then immerse yourself in its vibrant nightlife as evening falls.

Where to stay in Serbia

The country’s cultural heart

Belgrade is the perfect place to stay during a city break to Serbia.

The area around Republic Square in Belgrade Old Town – Stari Grad in Serbian – is ideal if you want to be in the centre of everything.

Here, you’ll be within walking distance of most of the major tourist spots, restaurants, cafes and shops.

The picturesque riverside

For a quieter stay in the capital, the neighbourhood of Zemun on the banks of the River Danube is a great choice.

Charming and peaceful, it’s perfect for family holidays in Serbia as it's slightly removed from the buzzing nightlife but still provides easy access to the main attractions.

It's also home to some of the city's best restaurants.

All you need to know about Serbia

Local currency

The local currency in Serbia is the dinar (KWD). ATMs are commonplace in large towns and cities, and major credit cards are generally accepted.

Public holidays

In addition to the particular religious holidays observed by different faiths, Serbia has a number of public holidays. Key among these are National Day (actually two days) on 15 and 16 January, and Armistice Day on 11 November.

Languages spoken

The official language of Serbia is Serbian, however many other languages – such as English, Hungarian and Croatian – are also spoken.

Local cuisine

Soups, stews and grilled meats are Serbian specialties. Try karadjordjeva šnicla, the Serbian version of schnitzel, and Sarma, stuffed cabbage leaves. For something comforting, order Đuveč - a meat and vegetable stew, similar to ratatouille.
